Wise words from Harry
Apart from the bit about Rooney....

Roy Hodgson could not possibly have survived as England manager but I've got no faith whatsoever in the Football Association picking the right man to succeed him.

Hodgson had to go after what was arguably the worst result in England's history, a final embarrassment in what has been a dreadful tournament.

But can anyone trust the FA to get the right man? They gave the job to Hodgson and he has failed spectacularly for the last two tournaments, or even three if you consider Euro 2012.

I'm seeing Gary Neville being made one of the favourites to succeed Hodgson but how the hell can he be considered after the job he did at Valencia? He should be culpable, he has never coached proper players and it would just be jobs for the boys if he was to be appointed.
England v Iceland: key match stats Play! 01:02

Gareth Southgate has done a great job with the under-21s but there's no way he is ready for the challenge of taking on the England team.

We've got the farcical situation of Dan Ashworth picking the next England manager and I'm really not sure about his credentials either. It appears that anyone connected with West Brom seems to have a chance.

I've got no idea where we go from here. Brendan Rodgers has taken the Celtic job so there's no chance of that while Eddie Howe is still too young.

You can count me out - I've made it clear how I'd have liked the job in the past but they aren't going to consider me now.

The FA are seriously going to have to pull a rabbit out of the hat because there don't seem to be any obvious contenders out there for me.

Iceland's win over England has to go down as one of the biggest embarrassments in our history.

England's defeat to Iceland was abysmal Credit: AP

They have got players who can't even get in Charlton Athletic's team and they made us look very a shambles.

We never looked like finding an equaliser and it was the footnote to an awful tournament performance.

England got out of the group by the skin of their teeth, failing to beat Russia and Slovakia, and the Wales win was also fortunate. It was a group we should have sailed through but we made it excruciating.

If we're being ultra-critical, the qualifying was hardly earthshattering either because of the dross we had to play.

It's a very worrying time for England and I've got no optimism over what the future holds either.

The defending was awful and there didn't seem to be any leadership on the field. I've said it many times that Rio Ferdinand and John Terry are so badly missed at international level. Gary Cahill and Chris Smalling may be impressive enough in the Premier League but they are well short for England.

I felt sorry for Wayne Rooney too, he was being asked to perform in a position which he was not used to and he just couldn't get things going for him. Perhaps Jamie Vardy should have been introduced earlier, or even started the game, because whenever he got the ball the Iceland defence seemed to look unsettled. Marcus Rashford was a final throw of the dice and it just looked like desperation from Hodgson at such a late stage in a crucial game.

He's clearly still bitter about the FA picking Hodgson over him but I agree with everything he says in this article.

Don't think he'll be getting an interview somehow

Be that as it may but in the blokes own words he knows nothing about football
So he is the ideal bloke is he?
Frankly as long as it is not Slav I am beyond caring, international football is declining year by year courtesy of FIFA, UEFA and domestically the FA
FA is about the right acronym for that shower

I don't agree with bagpuss often but he is 100% right when he says not Southgate, another yes man, another guy who has done fuck all to deserve it and we'll be right back here again in 4 to 6 years. Fatty would get them organised thats for sure but it would be nice to see a manger picked round pegs in round holes and players who deserve to be in the team not players who play for big clubs

Fuck off, Bungpuss.

Wouldn't still be bitter after being passed over by any chance would he? Don't let him anywhere near the job............

I know Dan Ashworth personally very well and frankly I could not think of anyone better than him to appoint our next England manager.

That's the way I feel about it now. Wouldn't give a fuck if they gave it to Allardyce even, I don't believe anything will ever be as bad as that performance yesterday, not in a major championships anyway.

So Harry wants the job then? I say give it to him how much worse could it get?

Re: Wise words from Harry
I find Harry's article symptomatic of the sort of out-of-date arrogance that permeates English football, fans, pundits. Opponents are 'dross', we should have sailed through the group etc etc. It's utter ignorance, a lack of respect for countries and players who train as much or more as ours do, can be as organised or more organised than we are, can want it as much or more than we do.

Harry knows he isn't getting it and you can sense the glee as he wrote that twisting the knife into the FA after the Rosie the Dog stuff.
To be fair he SHOULD have got the job when Hodgson did.
Hodgson has been abysmal. Ok at the likes of Fulham & West Brom but out of his depth at Liverpool. That should have been the giveaway. He is a small time manager.

Re: Wise words from Harry
The FA are a bunch of entitled toss pots shocker.

How does this ridiculous organisation work?
They are never successful maybe they need to sit back and realise they need a clue.
Within seconds of Woy saying bye bye's we had several favourites for his job none of them suitable, the FA are a stubborn old hat old boys club killer of football they do try but how many times have they picked the best man for the job instead of the best man for them?
